I recently had lunch  at Restaurant Eve in Old Town. I haven’t been there for lunch since they opened 5 or 6 years ago and this was a was truly a treat. The lounge offers a “Lickity Split Menu” for $14.95 and it includes two menu items. I had the soup of the day which was a creamy corn soup,  the Irish BLT and the birthday cake for desert. Everything was delicious.

If you are looking to for a quick getaway check out Bedford Springs Resort and Spa. Located in Bedford, Pennslyvania, about two and a half hours from DC its easy to get to and well worth the trip. It’s similar in style and charm to The Greenbrier and the The Homestead but smaller and more reasonably priced.  During its hey day the hotel hosted numerous presidents and dignitaries who would come to take in the natural spring water and stay all summer.

By 1986 the hotel had fallen on tough times and the owners went into bankruptcy. It sat vacant and in a state of disrepair for 20 years until an investor from Dallas and Omni Hotels partnered up to bring this grand resort back to life. The renovation is truly gorgeous and the designers went to painstaking lengths to preserve all of the hotel’s original features.

My husband and I just came back from 2 days at Bedford Springs and it was a little slice of heaven. As someone who is always underwhelmed by spas I was highly impressed. We dined in every restaurant and the food was delicious and the service was friendly and prompt. There is a wonderful pool  with cabanas and a pool bar and according to my husband the golf was unbelievable.

The resort is offering a number of specials this summer, especially during the week so check out their website for more details.

My favorite butcher is right on Mt. Vernon Avenue. In 2007 my friend, Steve Gatward, opened “Let’s Meat on The Avenue,” an old fashioned butcher shop offering wonderful cuts of local meats, sausages and poultry.  Originally from England, Steve had been formally trained as a butcher before moving to the states in the early 90s. After a successful career in the advertising business Steve finally decided to follow his dream and open a butcher shop. Four years later its been a tremendous success and one of our most popular local businesses.  Last week we stopped by to buy some his Kobe burgers. These are truly the best burgers I’ve ever had.  Steve’s shop is located at 2403 Mt. Vernon Avenue, Alexandria.
